“Run to Win”

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Christians are to discipline themselves spiritually like athletes training for a contest. In business, school, athletics, you name it – those who succeed are those who discipline themselves to perform the tasks that are necessary for success. And the same is true in our spiritual lives. We celebrate the fact that our salvation is not something we can earn – it’s important for us to realize that maturity in Christ comes through discipline! Paul wrote to the church in Corinth encouraging them in their lives of faith.  So, Paul tells us to be sure and run the race we’re given in such a way as to win the prize. But how can we run the race God has given each of us in such a way as to win the prize? Train yourself through discipline. (1 Corinthians 9:25-27) Training is hard work.  It takes sweat.  It takes effort.  It takes determination to do what you know it will take to get you to your goal.  Paul is talking about our life of faith.  To love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.  To love your neighbor just like you love yourself.  Get rid of obstacles. In Hebrews we’re told to “throw off everything that hinders – and the sin that so easily entangles” Keep your eyes on the goal. We need to stay focused on who and what we are.  “Let us fix our eyes upon Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews. 12:2-3)

 Questions:

  1. What was Paul telling the Corinthians about their life of faith?
  2. What is Christian discipline?
  3. What are some of the things that hinder our Christian faith?
